I rarely allow myself idiotic indulgences, mainly because I do not want to actually be an idiot.* But every once in a while, they sneak in there. So, dear readers, for your pleasure and my mortification, I will let you in on some of my guilty pleasures.
Glee: Yes, the sarcastic step-child of High School Musical has found it’s way into my living room and into my heart. I have to throw my moral compass out the window when I watch it, but don’t worry, I always rummage around in the flower bed and find it after the show is over.
The Legally Blonde Musical: I know, I know. It’s shameful that I enjoy a musical with an opening song called “Omigod.” But when Elle Woods snaps out of her lovelorn stupor and gets down to business, I feel a surge of solidarity. Grad school at Taylor, law school at Harvard…we’re two peas in a pod. My girl Elle has helped me get through many a research paper.
Lady Gaga: Never thought I’d be a fan of her music. But the songs are just so catchy! Lady Gaga is like a gigantic spider, weaving webs of pulsing beats and mindless lyrics that just tangle you up and hold you fast. You know the spider is going to suck out your innards and leave you a soul-less husk, but in the moment, you could just care less as long as that bass keeps rolling. Who could have known that a song about a telephone could lodge itself in your brain with such tenacity?
YouTube Videos: I get way too much enjoyment from quirky (and often trendy) YouTube videos. Despite the belief of my friends, I do not sit around surfing YouTube for videos. Seriously. The good ones just come to me, and I pass them on. It’s almost mystical. Current favorites: Antoine Dodson’s Bed Intruder Song, Kristin Wiig’s parody of Christine O’Donnell’s “I Am Not a Witch” campaign ad, and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. You are welcome.
So there you go. That’s all I can think of for now, but that’s more than enough embarrassment for one day, don’t you think?
What are your goofy indulgences?
*Enjoyment of any of these things does not really make you an idiot. I hope…
